In late 2024, the Isle of Rùm - a sparsley populated island off the western coast of Scotland - became Europe’s second Dark Sky Sanctuary.
I spent the cold, dark January nights on the island making a series of photographs that celebrate this darkness and speak to the importance of a life in the absence of skyglow. The pictures are accompanied by an essay from author, Kat Hill ;
“Blackness envelopes the island, but it’s not just this blackness you notice in a place where the skies are dark, but the light of stars that manifest suddenly at dusk, or the glow of a moon bright enough to navigate by”
‘Embracing Darkness’ was the cover story for the New York Times ScienceTimes in February, 2025
